Calmer lunchtimes, confident staff and more positive play in the playground are benefits highlighted by schools following pioneering training of their Lunchtime Supervisors.

Around 90 Lunchtime Supervisors from 16 schools in Barnsley and Warrington took part in a Lunchtime Supervisor training pilot developed by Hull University and ran in partnership with The School Food Trust.

The evaluation report shows that the training changed how Lunchtime Supervisors saw their role. Many expressed a sense of empowerment after only one month and again at three months. Following training, all participants reported feeling ‘very confident’ or ‘quite confident’ in promoting positive behaviour

Around 75% of participating schools said they had also seen a difference in the ways in which lunchtime staff dealt with difficult situations.

“There are fewer problems at lunchtime which means the children are bringing fewer problems back into the classroom after lunch”            School - Warrington

The training, carried out last year, covered :

v                 Workshop 1: The Role of Lunchtime Staff

v                 Workshop 2: Promoting Positive Lunchtime Behaviour

v                 Workshop 3: Encouraging Healthier Eating

Following training an in-depth evaluation was conducted at one and three month intervals to gain insight into the impact of training on both the learner and the school.

The Training and Development Agency (TDA) for schools is working with awarding organisations to develop specific qualification units for lunchtime supervisors that will appear on the new Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) from September 2010. Units will be able to be taken individually or as part of a recognised accredited qualification for school staff. Sue Tate, programme leader for QCF development at TDA said:

‘Bespoke training courses offer a beneficial introduction to those new to training, and will hopefully encourage lunchtime supervisors to embark on accredited qualifications in the future’
