The grand opening of a new kitchen training facility in Huntingdon marks the latest in the national School FEAST provision of training for the school food workforce.

The centre in Cambridgeshire is one of 29 specialist centres and partnerships comprising School FEAST, (Food Skills and Excellence Training) and was opened this month by Councillor Martin Curtis, Cambridgeshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children.

The kitchen will train school caterers from Cambridgeshire and neighbouring counties. It will offer a range of courses, including professional National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) in catering. It will also offer specialist short courses run by the Cambridgeshire Catering Services (CCS) internal training team and external training providers. This dedicated facility will ensure the Council’s CCS continued staff access to the latest, relevant skills training which, in turn, will ensure continued provision of high quality, nutritious school meals.

Councillor Curtis explained: “This is a superb new facility, which will further improve the range and quality of the meals we are able to offer by training staff to the highest standards. There has never been a better time for children to have school meals.”

Led by the School Food Trust, which allocated School FEAST capital grants and oversees the network’s expansion and development, the new training centre was built by Cambridgeshire County Council using £85,000 capital Government funding.

School Feast offers a range of training options which CCS is committed to delivering. It provides CCS employees with the opportunity to access free, professional NVQs. Each trainee has his or her own dedicated workstation with multi-media points available for interactive learning.
